Stevin “Hedake” Smith, a South Dallas native from Pleasant Grove, rose to prominence as a standout basketball player on a full scholarship to Arizona State University. Nicknamed “Hedake” by his mother, Eunice Smith, he went on to play internationally and briefly signed with the Dallas Mavericks. However, his career was derailed by a point-shaving scandal that led to a year in federal prison.
After a career-ending injury, Stevin retired from professional basketball and returned to Texas, where he rebuilt his life. He became an entrepreneur, owning a successful trucking business, and shifted his focus to mentoring young athletes. His journey of faith and redemption deepened his commitment to accountability and spiritual growth.
Now an author, speaker, and advocate, Stevin works with organizations like NCAA, MLB, and MGM to educate student-athletes on the dangers of gambling. His autobiography Hedake (Heal Every Day and Keep Evolving), shares his powerful story. A devoted husband and father of three, Stevin is a living example that it’s never too late to turn pain into purpose.
